Takeaway from Reed Hasting
- Context not control - This is Reed's take on empowering individuals by giving adequate context to the situation (problem in front of the team) and let individual managers/employees making decisions on behalf of the company. Based on my personal experience and also mentioned in the lecture, setting good context is really an art that needed time and experience to prefect.
- Focus on long term mission - Referring to the 4 big efforts (Netflix friends, online ad banner sales, used DVD sales, red envelope DVD sales) that the company created in during the battle with Blockbuster, none of them turned out to be useful even thought it "felt good" at the time. All of those effort were eventually terminated. The takeaway here is that output does not equal to outcome, focus on the core of the mission instead of branching out too early.
